Though in its early days, the site doubled as a cricket ground; The Garrison Savannah has been used as a horse racing venue since the 19th century. Then, Imperial military personnel and soldiers of the British Regiment would compete against plantation owners and the wealthy socialites of the era in horse racing events at that time. However, In the early 20th century, the Garrison was expanded and today includes several significant buildings.
Some of the important buildings surrounding the Savannah include; the Main Guard House and Clock Tower in the west, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society at the east, St Ann’s Fort to the south and the military hospital. It is also important to note that George Washington House, a former residence of the first United States President, is also located to the north of the Savannah.
The Garrison Savannah is home to the Barbados Turf Club. Established in 1905, this club manages, promotes and organises horse racing events throughout the year. The track is an oval turf course that measures 6 furlongs, but races are run at different lengths from 5 to 10 furlongs. The Barbados Turf Club has three main horse racing seasons that span the entire year; January to April, May to September and November to December and in total there are 185 races and roughly 25 race meetings that are held at the Garrison Savannah throughout the racing seasons.
The star of the racing season is the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup - a premier thoroughbred racing championship event hosted at The Garrison Savannah. This event attracts thoroughbred owners, jockeys and trainers from all over the world to compete in this prestigious annual event, which is considered to be one of the biggest sporting events in Barbados every year.
When it is not being used for horse racing, there are several other activities for patrons to enjoy. The national Independence Day Parade happens every November 30th - The military and prominent political figures, as well as the general public, gather and give speeches, watch the soldiers and police march and enjoy entertainment. Every Easter there is the kite flying competition where people bring kites of all sizes and designs for a day-long family affair. It is also used for Rugby and Football (Soccer) training and games. On any given day space is also used by people seeking to exercise.
There are lots to enjoy throughout the year at the Garrison Savannah. From horse races to concerts, to military parades, the venue is a hub of activity. As at any major event there is typically a selection of Barbadian food and drinks on sale as well as the art and craft of Barbadian artists and patrons are encouraged to support the local vendors and craftspeople.
